Tips for writing your story
Thank you for taking the time to reflect and write about the music that connects you to someone you’ve lost. This is a space to honour their memory, keep their story alive and explore the role music plays in your connection to them.
There’s no right or wrong way to do this, it’s YOUR story that matters. If you’d like your story to be part of any upcoming projects we’re working on, for example the creation of a book, an exhibition or a series of workshops and talks, we encourage you to write less than 500 words.
Tell your story in four parts
-
What’s the name of the song or
piece of music?Who is the artist or composer?
When did you first hear this music?
-
Who does this music connect you to?
Why is this music special to your relationship with them?
Does it remind you of a specific moment or memory?
Can you describe that moment by painting a picture with words?
-
How does listening to this music make you feel?
How does it help you remember
or celebrate your loved one?If this music could say something about your loved one, what would it say?
-
Do you still listen to this music regularly? If so, how does it help you today?
Have you shared this music with others? Describe that moment.
If you were to share this music with someone else, what would you want them to know about it?
Take a moment to prepare yourself for this reflection
Create a Comfortable Space
Find a quiet, comforting spot where you can reflect without interruptions. Perhaps have a photo of your loved one nearby or an object that reminds you of them.
Listen to the Music
If you would like to*, play the piece of music you’re writing about. Let it bring up memories, emotions or moments you shared.
* Some people choose not to listen to the music and still share their story.
Set Your Intention
Remember, this is about celebrating the connection and the story behind the music. It’s okay to feel a range of emotions as you write. Be guided by how you feel. You might even find it helpful to label the emotions you’re experiencing.
Your Writing Mindset
Write as if you’re talking to a good friend. Let the words flow naturally, without worrying about structure. If you’re feeling stuck, focus on describing how the music makes you feel or the memories it brings back. Take breaks if needed. This process may bring up strong emotions so only do what feels right for you.
